Artist Feature: Robert Indiana
As creatives, we often hope to cultivate the next big thing. Something that will open doors for us, that will inspire others, that will set us apart to stand out and create a new trend. Robert Indiana’s sculpture “LOVE”, was the next big thing that set him apart, but his career was nearly consumed by it.
The “LOVE” sculpture is one of the 20th century’s most recognizable works of art, but it was also one that was highly plagiarized. Many museums even carried out to show works that were said to be Robert Indiana’s but instead were mimics of the monumental imagery of “LOVE.” His door of opportunity became a one-way street which would direct the audience to a single idea that would cause rampant copying, declining prices, and lack of appreciation of other works beyond “LOVE.”
Robert Indiana passed away on Saturday, May 19th, 2018. He left showing how a single image, can impact the art world.
